Common Austin AC Problems and Solutions

June 13, 2016

We’ve discussed several of the most common air conditioning problems Austin faces, but now we’re going to talk to you about some common air conditioning issues that you can help troubleshoot.

Your air conditioner is on but not blowing cool air.

If your air conditioning system is running but not actually cooling, you might need to have your refrigerant levels checked. Refrigerant is needed to make sure the air coming out of your A/C is actually cool and keeps you comfortable. Low refrigerant is often a symptom of a leak or that the system wasn’t charged correctly.

One way to confirm if you are low on refrigerant is to go to your A/C system and locate the two copper pipes. If the larger of the two is “sweating” or giving off condensation, touch the pipe to feel if it’s cold. If it is, you are most likely good to go and don’t require more refrigerant.

If you’re not certain or the pipe is not producing condensation and is not cold when you place your hand on it, call Strand Brothers Service Experts and we’ll stop by and examine your refrigerant levels and discover why your system is not blowing cool air. Keep in mind, only an EPA Certified technician should handle refrigerant for central A/C systems, due to the dangers of handling this potentially dangerous chemical.

You air condenser fan isn’t rotating.

There are several reasons your condenser fan isn’t rotating. One might be that it just burned out and you need a replacement. Humidity tends to cause more condensation so another issue could be that the water is not draining correctly or that the drain is obstructed. If you can check for these things, you may be able to find the issue; but, if not, give Strand Brothers Service Experts a call and we can determine what has stopped your condenser fan from rotating and walk you through your options to get your A/C system problem corrected.

Your A/C is not providing sufficient air cooling.

The first step is to try lowering your thermostat. It seems silly but sometimes we tend to ignore the obvious. If lowering the thermostat doesn’t get your home cooling and comfortable again, check and swap out the air filter. If the air filter is blocked, it could cause serious cooling problems. Another thing that could be causing your lack of cooling is an A/C system that is not sized properly, and unfortunately this is an all-too-common issue when homes are built. Strand Brothers Service Experts is happy to come out and complete an analysis to determine if the size of your AC is causing your problems.

AC shuts on and off constantly

If your AC is short cycling, or turning on or off constantly, it could mean one of multiple things. One possibility is that your condenser or evaporator is blocked or dirty and should be cleaned. Once the system is cleaned and all clogs moved elsewhere, you may be back to a normal running AC. Keep in mind that humidity also plays a role so if the house cools to the proper temperatures, but then the humidity causes your house to heat up quickly, it could result in an on-again, off-again AC because it’s having to work vigorously to keep you cool and comfortable.

No matter your trouble, whatever usual or unusual AC problem you run into, Strand Brothers Service Experts is here for you all day, everyday. We are available all the time so we can get your AC system cooling and get your home comfortable quickly.
