Common Austin AC Problems and Solutions

June 13, 2016

We previously told you about several of the most common air conditioning problems Austin faces, but today we are here to tell you about some typical air conditioning issues that you can help troubleshoot.

The A/C is on but not blowing cool air.

If your air conditioning system is running but not really cooling, you might need to have your refrigerant levels checked. Refrigerant is needed to make sure the air blowing from the A/C is really cool and keeps you comfortable. Low refrigerant is often a symptom of a leak or that the system wasn’t charged correctly.

One way to confirm if you are low on refrigerant is to go to your A/C system and locate the two copper pipes. If the larger of the two is “sweating” or producing condensation, put your hand on the pipe and feel if it’s cold. If it is, you are probably good to go and don’t require more refrigerant.

If you’re not certain or the pipe is not covered in condensation and is not cold when you place your hand on it, call Strand Brothers Service Experts and we’ll stop by and check your refrigerant levels and discover why your system is not blowing cool air. Keep in mind, only an EPA Certified technician should handle refrigerant for central air conditioning systems, due to the dangers of handling this potentially dangerous chemical.

You air condenser fan isn’t rotating.

There are several reasons your condenser fan might not be turning. One might be that it just burned out and you need a replacement. Humidity typically causes more condensation so another problem to look out for is that the water is not draining correctly or that the drain is obstructed. If you can check for these things, you may be able to locate the issue; but, if not, give Strand Brothers Service Experts a call and we can determine what has stopped your condenser fan from circulating and walk you through your options to get your A/C system problem fixed.

Your air conditioner is not providing adequate air cooling.

The first step is to try lowering your thermostat. It seems silly but sometimes we tend to ignore the obvious. If lowering the thermostat doesn’t get your home cooling and comfortable again, check and replace the air filter. If the air filter is clogged, it could cause serious cooling problems. Another thing that could result in your lack of cooling is an A/C system that is not sized properly, and unfortunately this is an all-too-common issue when homes are constructed. Strand Brothers Service Experts is happy to come out and complete an analysis to confirm whether or not the size of your AC is causing your problems.

Air Conditioner shuts on and off over and over

If your air conditioner is short cycling, or turning on or off constantly, it could mean one of several things. One possibility is that your condenser or evaporator is clogged or dirty and should be cleaned. Once the equipment is cleaned and all clogs moved out of the way, you may be back to a normal running air conditioner. Keep in mind that humidity also plays a role so if the house cools to the correct temperatures, but then the humidity causes your house to heat up quickly, it could result in an on-again, off-again system because it’s having to work vigorously to keep your home cool and comfortable.

No matter your trouble, whatever usual or unusual AC problem you run into, Strand Brothers Service Experts is here for you 24/7/365. We are available all the time so we can get your air conditioner cooling and get your comfortable as soon as possible.
