The Joseph Groh Foundation is an incredible organization that offers financial support to people in the construction trade who are living with life-altering injuries. Once a year the organization honors multiple recipients with a grant and in 2016 the Joseph Groh Foundation was excited to present Adil Karamally as a recipient.
Adil, originally from Pakistan, obtained his MBA from the University of Chicago and afterwards acquired ProStar Mechanical Services of Anaheim, CA and received his HVAC and general contracting license. In 2013, Adil endured a severe stroke at the young age of 48. He lost the use of his left arm and it left his left leg greatly impaired, causing foot drop. Only able to walk with a heavy brace, his muscles began to atrophy and his doctors worried that he would most likely become permanently in a wheelchair.
Because the stroke left him unable to work, Adil’s wife, Laila, was their sole source of income, resulting in financial stress on the couple with a young child in elementary and three more children in college. Their hopes were lifted when Adil was a good candidate for the WalkAid System, a piece of equipment that incorporates functional electrical stimulation to help someone with foot drop walk again. But when they learned of the cost, Adil and Laila realized they were not able to afford the WalkAid System in addition to the extensive rehab that would be required so he could understand how to use it.
Luckily, a professional at WalkAid told Adil and Laila about the Joseph Groh Foundation and, because of the wonderful grant, Adil got the WalkAid System and has already experienced wonderful success. His muscle is starting to regenerate and not atrophy, bringing hope back to Adil and Laila.
