How a Pressure Switch Works

This part plays an important duty as your furnace prepares to warm your space.

Here’s what goes on after your thermostat’s call for heat:

  • Your furnace’s control board commences running the draft inducer blower motor. This drains combustion gases from the heat exchanger and brings in new gas and air so the burners can fire.
  • When the pressure switch senses that sufficient air is being pulled into the burners, it closes and signals the control board to ignite the furnace.
  • Your furnace ignites and supplies heat.

What Happens When a Pressure Switch Breaks Down

When your pressure switch isn’t operating the way it should, you’ll likely hear the fan run and the switch clicking a few times before the furnace shuts down completely. When a part isn’t working right, your furnace will turn off as a safety precaution.

Your furnace will tell you something is amiss with a red flash from its indicator light, which it uses to exhibit error codes. It uses this red light to flash code, like Morse code.

You may see fast flashes or an alternating slow flash as it communicates a fault code.
