What NATE Certification is and Why it Matters

November 08, 2016

Strand Brothers Service Experts in Austin always talks about how our service techs are NATE-certified, and while it sounds reassuring, what does it actually mean?

NATE stands for North American Technician Excellence and, as mentioned on their website, is the nation’s largest certification organization for HVAC (heating, ventilation, air conditioning) and refrigeration technicians. The organization is owned, operated, developed, and supported by the entire HVAC and refrigeration industry but not everyone in the industry is required to be certified by NATE. The certification is voluntary and technicians can work in the heating, cooling, ventilation, and refrigeration industry without being NATE-certified.

It’s important to Strand Brothers Service Experts that our experts are NATE-certified to make sure we are sending the most qualified and professional technicians into your home. To make sure technicians meet these criteria, the NATE-certification assessments validate real-world working knowledge of HVACR systems for technicians. The tests are knowledge-based tests that assess the technician’s knowledge of these subjects.

Since Strand Brothers Service Experts focuses on the HVAC side of NATE-certification (not refrigeration), there are only specific areas applicable to our technicians. NATE exam candidates may earn installation and/or service certification in one or more of the specialty areas listed below:

  • Air Conditioning
  • Air Distribution
  • Gas Heating
  • Oil Heating
  • Heat Pumps
  • Hydronics Gas (service only)
  • Hydronics Oil (service only)
  • Light Commercial Refrigeration (service only)

  • Ground Source Heat Pump Loop Installer
  • Senior HVAC Efficiency Analyst
